The charm of a private home performance lies in the intimacy of the setting. Recently, I had the pleasure of providing the musical backdrop for Adil’s 45th birthday—a stunning milestone celebration in the heart of Westboro, Ottawa. I want to extend a huge thank you to Julia and Adil for welcoming me into their incredible home.
The evening was made even more special by the story behind their grand piano. A gorgeous instrument, it had actually come with their house but had sat silent, never having been played by the family. After a careful restoration by a piano technician, the instrument finally came to life, filling the space with music for the very first time.
As the piano’s new voice echoed through the home, it acted as a sophisticated thread through the cocktail hour. I curated a setlist that leaned into a cinematic feel, blending timeless standards with modern arrangements that complemented the upscale, modern vibe of the party. There is a unique resonance in an older, restored piano; it carries a warmth that perfectly matched the evening’s atmosphere.
A celebration this seamless is always a collaborative effort. It was a joy to work alongside a stellar team of Ottawa vendors to bring Julia and Adil’s vision to life. The evening was expertly coordinated by Amanda Julia Events, with creative balloons by The Balloon Bar, refreshing service from Thirst Responder, and the beautiful moments captured by Kamara Morozuk Photography.
One of the highlights of the night was seeing the guests gather around the piano. Transitioning from a relaxed cocktail set into a high-energy celebration, I was able to read the room and let the music follow the guests’ energy. From the glowing fairy lights in the Westboro night to the laughter shared over the keys, this event was a perfect example of how live music transforms a house into a celebration.
